Real Madrid 3 vs 1 Liverpool FC
MADRID GET REAL SERIOUS AGAINST LIVERPOOL
Real Madrid took a big step towards the semi final of the Champions League after winning 3-1 against Liverpool tonight in the first leg of the quarter final.
The home side took the lead in the 27th minute through Vinicius JR after veteran Toni Kroos played a simple long ball behind the reds back line for the Brazilian winger to chest down and slot past goalkeeper Alisson into the net.
Liverpool thought they had steadied themselves after conceding, but instead inflicted more damage upon themselves by gifting a poor goal to their opponents in the 36th minute.
A defensive error from Alexander-Arnold allowed Marco Asensio to tap home and double his sides advantage 9 minutes before halftime.
After the break Liverpool came out with a renewed energy and started to play with a bit more zip and bite about them in the early stages, which proved correctly as Mo Salah pulled one back in the 51st minute.
The English team then looked on top as they had a good 20-minute spell of the tie of which they were in control of and went looking for an equaliser.
However, they couldn’t produce one and rather conceded a sloppy third goal in the 65 minute to Vinicius who picked up his second goal of the game, after a first time shot following a attacking run from Luka Modric.
This against a Real Madrid team who were missing their regular centre halves in Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane due to injury and the latter who tested positive for COVID-19 on the morning of the match.
This now leaves Liverpool with a huge mountain to climb in the second leg at Anfield in eight day’s’ time on the 14th of April.
It was proved evident that Reds manager Jurgen Klopp was clearly unhappy with his side’s performance in the first half as he decided to substitute Naby Keita for Thiago 3 minutes before the break.
The red half of Liverpool did themselves no favours as they were second best for most of the evening and looked out of ideas.
Trent Alexander-Arnold now looks set to be in for a real battle from now until the end of season for a seat on the plane to the Euros this summer after tonight. The right back looks to have fallen down the pecking order of Gareth Southgate’s plans with the fullback being omitted from the latest England squad.
